Rebecca MacKinnon is a Bernard Schwartz Senior Fellow at the New America Foundation. She is the author of Consent of the Networked: The Worldwide Struggle for Internet Freedom (2012). She is also the co-founder of Global Voices Online, a global citizen media network.
For nine years, MacKinnon worked as a journalist for CNN, serving as the network’s Beijing Bureau Chief and Correspondent from 1998-2001. She has been a Research Fellow at the Harvard University Berkman Center for Internet and Society, where her work focused on Chinese Internet censorship and corporate responsibility. She has served on the faculty of the University of Hong Kong’s Journalism and Media Studies Centre and was a Project Lead for Creative Commons Hong Kong. She has additionally held fellowships from the Open Society Institute and the Princeton University Center for Information Technology Policy.
